TMS - Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation
Advanced TMS therapy serving all of New Jersey. A non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment for depression and OCD with high success rates.
If you or a loved one are struggling with mental health conditions like depression, you know that standard treatments—like medication and talk therapy has not work. When those traditional paths fall short, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) offers a safe, proven, and non-invasive alternative.
What is TMS?
TMS is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared treatment that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in areas of the brain known to control mood. It is a completely medication-free, outpatient procedure.
To understand how it works, think of a brain dealing with depression as a car with a sluggish battery. TMS acts like a gentle "jump start" for your brain's natural pathways.
How Does It Work?
- Magnetic Pulses: A small magnetic coil is placed gently against your head.
- Targeted Stimulation: The coil sends magnetic pulses (similar in strength to an MRI machine) passing safely through the skull.
- Awakening Nerve Cells: These pulses create tiny electrical currents that activate and "wake up" underactive nerve cells.
- Improved Communication: Over time, these cells begin communicating more efficiently, helping to regulate mood and relieve symptoms.
Standard TMS vs. Deep TMS (dTMS)
While exploring your options, you will likely see two main terms: Standard/Repetitive TMS (rTMS) and Deep TMS (dTMS).
| Feature | Standard TMS (rTMS) | Deep TMS (dTMS) |
|---|---|---|
| Technology | Uses a targeted "Figure-8" magnetic coil. | Uses a cushioned "H-Coil" helmet. |
| Depth & Scope | Reaches surface-level, highly precise brain regions. | Reaches deeper and covers a broader area of the brain. |
| Session Length | Typically 15 to 40 minutes per session. | Often shorter, around 20 minutes (with new accelerated protocols under 5 minutes). |
While the U.S. FDA limits its clearance to a few specific conditions (primarily depression, OCD, and smoking cessation), the European Union utilizes the CE Mark. This regulatory system certifies medical equipment based on a wider spectrum of clinical evidence, meaning European clinics can legally treat many psychiatric, neurological, and physical health conditions.
In Europe, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is approved for a much broader range of conditions than in the United States.
Mental Health & Psychiatric Disorders
- Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Approved for treating severe or treatment-resistant depression, as well as associated anxiety symptoms.
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): For patients who do not find relief from traditional behavior therapy or SSRI medications.
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): Cleared to help re-regulate overactive fear and trauma pathways in the brain.
- Bipolar Disorder: Approved to manage depressive episodes associated with bipolar conditions.
- Schizophrenia (Negative Symptoms): Specifically targets the "negative" symptoms, such as severe social withdrawal, lack of motivation, and emotional flattening.
Addiction & Substance Use
- Smoking Cessation: Targets the brain's reward pathways to significantly curb nicotine cravings.
- Other Addictions: Broadly approved in Europe to assist with various substance use disorders, including alcohol or drug dependency.
Neurological & Neurodegenerative Conditions
- Alzheimer’s Disease: Used to stimulate and preserve cognitive function and memory pathways.
- Parkinson’s Disease: Aimed at reducing motor function symptoms and associated tremors.
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Cleared to help manage specific behavioral and executive functioning challenges.
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS): Primarily approved to address severe MS-related fatigue and motor dysfunction.
- Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: Used to stimulate cortical plasticity, helping patients regain movement or speech after a stroke.
Chronic Pain Management
- Chronic Neuropathic Pain: Approved to treat long-term, severe pain caused by nerve damage or central nervous system issues.
- Migraine Headaches: Used to mitigate acute migraine pain and assist with overall prevention.
What to Expect During Treatment
- No Sedation Required: You remain completely awake and alert. You can drive yourself home or go right back to work immediately after a session.
- The Sensation: You will hear a clicking sound and feel a light tapping sensation on your scalp.
- The Routine: A typical treatment schedule involves daily sessions (Monday through Friday) for roughly 4 to 6 weeks.
- Minimal Side Effects: Unlike antidepressants, TMS does not cause weight gain, dry mouth, or sleep issues. The most common side effects are just minor, temporary headaches or slight scalp discomfort.
Is TMS Right for You?
TMS is primarily recommended for adults—and recently cleared for adolescents aged 15-21—who have not found relief from traditional depression treatments. Please Call Institute for Better Living.
